In the Middle Ages, large blocks of gentle soap were crafted in the Mediterranean port city of Marseille from olive oil, marine ash and sea water.
The quality of these soaps achieved fame throughout Europe and in 1688 French law declared only soaps made according to certain ancient methods could bear the mark Savon de Marseille. The soap is still made using these methods today.
